Questions Concerning the proposed Michigan Massage Licensing bill: Who is behind the bill? Who is the AMMA and how is it structured? How many members?, Is it a non profit? Tax exempt? Who are the leaders? What is their vision? Does this article reflect the agenda of the AMMA? http://www.blueheronacademy.com/articles/radio.html The exam section of the bill states: "the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB) or the National Certification Exam of the American Medical Massage Association, or other equivalent national or state massage therapy examination" will be accepted. The exam process, development, how the content is derived, and other information is readily available from the NCBTMB for their exam. What information is available for the AMMA exam, which is also included? Why are these two exams mentioned by name at all, rather than a generic reference (such as NOCA approved)? The word "massage", which is in general use, would be strictly proscribed by this bill. What happens to relaxation massage in Michigan? Is 500 hours needed for simple relaxation and spa massage? What about non-massage therapists who have the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork title? Will they still be able to advertise their certification? What other groups should be included in the exemption section? Cranialsacral Therapy? Structural Integration? Tuina? Shiatsu? Heller? And so many more... What are the costs for Michigan taxpayers? What are the costs for Massage Therapists? Does this approach support alternative health care in Michigan and the development of these emerging professions?
These questions have been asked. More will come up duringthis process. I'll post answers and responses as I recieve them.
